The Algonquin Hotel, Autograph Collection

The Algonquin is our favorite hotel in New York City and has been for the last 15 years. The things that keep us coming back are the staff and the quality of service. This was exemplified on this most recent trip by the performance of Front Desk Agent, Maria Infante. Ms. Infante did her usual outstanding job of warmly welcoming us back, of making sure our every need was taken care of and of helping plan for our next visit in October! The location works perfectly for our annual trips to Broadway and the American Ballet Theatre. Most Broadway show are in walking distance. Recent renovations have the hotel rooms and suites looking better than they have in years!

The Algonquin Hotel Times Square feels like stepping into another era, warm, cozy, and full of history. The lobby is especially beautiful and perfect for slowing down. Drinks and food were great, service was welcoming, and the location is ideal! It’s close to everything but still feels tucked away. They’re currently renovating some rooms, which is exciting, and they have an adorable resident rescue cat.

Recently stayed for 3 nights at The Algonquin. Beautiful historic hotel just off Bryant Park. I had a rental car that I was going to need later in the trip and they had valet parking…great right? The valet guy then told me that it was $95 with no in/out privileges and that was going to get pricey as I was going to need to take the car a couple of times. Then he told me he would make me a deal. Pay him $60 cash and I could take it whenever I want. Sounded like a good deal so I paid him. Then when I came back with the car he said I would need to pay each of the 3 valets $60. Still a better deal so I did it. Then two days later he said that I needed to pay each of the 3 valets $60 each PER DAY!! He seemed to have forgotten to mention that up front and I told him that was sketchy as hell. Spoke with the hotel manager who said that was normal. That’s messed up! We argued and he gave me back $60 of the $120 that I had paid and was visibly annoyed. So dumb of me to fall for that crap and it ruined the whole stay. Will NEVER be back. It’s a Marriott Autograph collection and I’ve always enjoyed those but never again here. Sketchy place.

I stumbled upon the Algonquin randomly, and realized this was the spot of the infamous Algonquin roundtable of 1920’s literary lore. Being a relative of James Thurber, cartoonist for the New Yorker, and seeing his name on the building, I stopped in for a drink. The service provided by Sabin was exceptional. It was a special moment, and I am so grateful for the kindness of the staff, and Sabin in particular. I would like to thank him for his kindness and generosity. James would be happy to know an aspiring artist with midwestern roots was welcomed into the circles of New York a century later.

Had our room cancelled today by hotel employee, Gwyen Moses, without recourse available. The hotel contacted me a few days ago to have me update an expired credit card on file. The hotel threatened to cancel my reservation by 4pm that day if the card was not updated. I followed their instructions to the letter and updated my card on the Marriott website. Today, I received an email from Gwyen saying they had cancelled my reservation because the card wasn’t updated, when it was. To make matters worse, the hotel then wouldn’t rebook me and said the hotel was full. This is how they treat Platinum Marriott members. Do not do expect fair customer service from Gwyen nor this hotel. The previous reviews on poor customer service are 100% spot on.
