A perfectly reasonable hotel. Located on Eighth Avenue in Manhattan, right in the thick of things within walking distance to everything, including the subway. The staff is nice and courteous, trying to help with everything. Excellent room service. The entire area is crowded with homeless people, drunkards, and other strange individuals. This somewhat dampened the sense of security and luxury that the hotel tries to project. To its credit, it stations security personnel on-site to enhance the sense of security. Some of the rooms, especially on the upper floors, are not suitable for a family of four. The rooms are outdated and small. We were forced to move to a room on a lower floor for an extra fee, even though we had paid for a high floor. I recommend checking the room situation carefully with the hotel before booking.

Ideally located in Midtown and opposite Penn Station, this is one of New York's iconic buildings and a great place to stay. Very comfortable and spacious room, well maintained and with a great outlook onto the city. Friendly staff. The Tick Tock Diner on the ground floor is a must for breakfast, as you watch the bustle outside. The Banker & Butcher steakhouse in the former basement vault is quirky and serves great dishes, but can be expensive. The Trattoria Bianca on the ground floor offers tasty, mid-priced dishes.

Good rooms at usually decent prices. Service is unbeatable, you got a 24/7 diner attached to the building that isn't bad. Steps from Moynihan and Port Authority, and of course the Garden. There's probably more luxurious rooms available that I've just never sought out, but even the cheaper rooms are fine. What's not to love

Recently stayed here in the Basic Metro Queen Room for 8 nights. Before arriving, I was a little worried after reading so many negative reviews. Yes, the hotel and rooms are definitely old and a bit dated, but I actually ended up having a really pleasant stay. The room was on the smaller side, but there was still plenty of space to move around, with a wardrobe and bedside tables providing enough storage for our belongings. The room and hotel in general was nice and clean and tidy. Despite being in such a busy part of Manhattan, the room was surprisingly quiet, making it easy to get a good night’s sleep. The location is one of the hotel’s biggest strengths. You’re within walking distance of so many of New York City’s attractions, and there are excellent public transport connections right outside the door, making it incredibly easy to get anywhere in the city. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful. A special mention goes to the housekeeping team, who happily worked around our schedule and accommodated our requests without any issues. Our stay also included a daily voucher for a snack and drink at the Tick Tock Diner located just off the hotel lobby. This was a nice bonus each morning. The staff there were so funny and welcoming, and if you fancy something more filling, there’s a great menu with plenty of options available to purchase. The biggest concern for me before booking was the sheer number of reviews claiming guests were wrongly charged a $500 smoking fee despite never smoking. I don’t smoke and had read so many stories that I genuinely considered cancelling and booking somewhere else. Thankfully, I can only comment on my own experience, and I’m pleased to say this never happened. We weren’t hit with any unexpected charges at all, and check-out was completely straightforward. If you want a clean, comfortable place to sleep in an unbeatable location, with friendly staff and excellent transport links, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
