National Day

Celebrated annually on December 18, Qatar National Day marks the country’s unification in 1878, when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father, Sheikh Muhammad Bin Thani, as the ruler of Qatar.

As well as being a public holiday, National Day is also marked with fireworks, sports competitions and a large parade through Doha.

Ramadan

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the time when Muslims believe that God (Allah) first revealed the Koran (the Islamic holy book) to the Prophet Muhammad.

Taking place at a different time each year due to Islam following a lunar calendar, Ramadan sees Muslims fast during daylight hours.

Eid Al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, with Muslims celebrating by giving money to the poor and feasting with family members.
