I normally avoid large chain hotels like the Shangri-La, so I was a bit reluctant to book it. I’m glad I did. Our room on one of the upper floors was beautiful, with a great view and a lovely little tent that the kids absolutely loved. The breakfast was excellent with a great selection. I would happily give this hotel five stars, but two things made me drop one star. First, guests are not allowed to wear slippers to breakfast. I’m on holiday, not on a business trip, and I like to feel comfortable. Second, children under 16 are not allowed in the gym, which I think is an unnecessarily high age limit, especially when they are accompanied by their parents. Apart from those two points, we had a great stay.

I had such a wonderful birthday stay at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur. I wrote to them ahead of my stay to request simple décor and just a slice of gluten-free cake in the room, but the hotel truly went above and beyond. I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade from a Superior Room to a newly refurbished Executive Room upon check-in, which made the experience even more special. They also prepared about 10 balloons and a party hat in the room, which made it so fun for a little birthday photoshoot. On top of that, they thoughtfully customized a gluten-free chocolate cake, a candle and matches, and even included a fruit platter. (The roses were from pasar seni for about rm30) The hospitality throughout my stay was excellent. The staff were warm, attentive, and always ready to help — whether assisting with my luggage or responding promptly to any requests. I also really enjoyed the buffet — there was a wide variety of food, including a gluten-free corner, and everything was delicious. The refurbished room was beautiful, comfortable, and made the stay even more enjoyable. Thank you to the team for making my birthday celebration such a pleasant and enjoyable experience — I truly appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness that went into it. Overall, a truly memorable stay. Highly recommended for anyone looking for exceptional hospitality and a special experience.

What made our stay especially memorable was the thoughtful surprise that awaited us upon arrival. We checked in quite late in the evening, and the hotel had prepared a beautiful birthday setup to celebrate my niece’s birthday. The room was decorated with balloons, birthday hat, and festive touches that immediately made the occasion feel special. To our surprise, the hotel also prepared a birthday cake, chocolates, and a lovely fruit hamper filled with fresh fruits. It was such a thoughtful and generous gesture that truly exceeded our expectations. Seeing the excitement and happiness on both my niece’s and my son’s faces when they entered the room was priceless. They were absolutely delighted by the decorations and special treats that had been prepared for them. The attention to detail and effort put into the celebration made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. Although I wasn’t able to take many photos of the birthday setup, it is a memory that our family will always treasure. The warmth, thoughtfulness, and genuine hospitality shown by the team made the celebration even more meaningful.

We stay in KL 2 or 3 times every month at 4 & 5 star hotels. The staff at the Shangri-la are outstanding and the breakfast is brilliant. However the hotel is seriously let down by the "extras" in the room & the lack of a welcome drink & the policy to charge the RM 10 tourist tax for the non named foreign guest. When we stay at other high end hotels in KL we are given either a welcome drink on arrival when checking in, or a voucher for a drink in the bar / lounge. At the Shangri-la this was not offered & when requested we were told that the hotel doesn't do that. When we got to the room, there was no personalised welcome note or message on the TV, there were no snacks / fruit provided. For example at the other hotels we stay at there many be some complimentary muruku, or chips, or M&Ms or fruit provided. There is nothing "extra" at the Shangri-la. When we returned to the room in the evening there was no turn down service or chocolate on the pillow etc. On check out we were told to pay the RM 10 tourist tax for the second guest. My wife is Malaysian & she books the hotel & checks in to avoid paying this charge. We use the same process for the multitude of 4 & 5 star hotels we have stayed at in KL. There has never been an issue until the Shangri-la. The receptionist insisted that we paid the RM 10 for me - a foreigner. When we explained that I did not book the hotel she replied that it is the Shangri-la policy to charge the RM 10 to foreign guests even if they did not make the booking. How can this be ? How can the other hotels not do this ? On the positive side the staff are excellent & the breakfast is brilliant, unfortunately due to the other issues we will never stay at the Shangri-la KL again.

I am not exaggerating when I say the rooms are really cold, and the bed is probably one of the biggest I have ever slept in. I always end up having some of my best sleep here, even when I am away from home. The breakfast spread is also very good. It is not overly extravagant or trying too hard to impress, but it is well thought out and has more than enough variety for different types of travellers. The gym is another highlight. It is easily one of the best hotel gyms I have seen, with excellent facilities that make it feel more like a proper fitness centre than a typical hotel gym. This has become my go-to hotel whenever I am in KL.
