Selina Chelsea Hotel, New York

My wife and I recently stayed at the Hotel Alameda to enjoy a fun weekend in New York City. We were very disappointed. From the start, the entire experience was poor. The street in Chelsea was dark and unwelcoming, especially at night. The receptionist was friendly but reviewed the hotel amenities so quickly it was hard to remember what was said. A handout would have been helpful. The hallways were painted black making it hard to see and the lighting was poor. The room had a platform bed with abut a foot of wood framing all around. You had to remind yourself to step up and step down and not to trip! The bathroom was funky if you like a shower where your partner can see everything! How's that for privacy! It would have been nice if a guide to local restaurants was available because reception was not that familiar with the neighborhood. And one night, after returning to our room in the evening, and getting in bed to sleep, the fire alarm went off at 11 PM! We trudged down the fire stairway and out the fire exit. The New York Fire Department responded and eventually determined that the alarm was false, so we could return to our rooms. To boot, for the nights we stayed, it was not an inexpensive hotel. We are not planning on going back.

We stayed at the Hotel Alameda this past weekend (12/13-12/15). The decor, space, and vibes were just what we were looking for and the location was central to everything we had planned for the trip. There is a bar in the lobby, as well as one in the basement (which was closed for a private event on 12/13, and then closed for 12/14), as well as a rooftop bar. We had dinner at the rooftop bar, Creatures, on 12/13. It was good, but freezing because it’s enclosed with plastic essentially and there was only one heater. It also had what I would describe as “random junk” about which could be better stored. The room itself was small, which we expected, but comfortable. There are about ten thousand switches to work the various lighting options. There is no dresser, but ample closet/cabinet space. The biggest downside to the room was the bathroom. There wasn’t really a space to get ready, think makeup and hair, and the sink was so tiny. My biggest complaint, however, was the fire alarm. The fire alarm went off 12/13 into 12/14 five different times: 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, 8:00, 8:40, and 8:55. There was no explanation given and no apology for the major inconvenience of being jarred awake. I see in recent reviews that this is an ongoing issue. I would consider staying here again, but definitely think more should have been done about the alarm situation.

It's affordable, it's not too far from a station, solid location relative to the rest of the island. I was a little worried after all the mixed reviews, but I booked Hotel Alameda on a time crunch based on location, price, and availability. This hotel is DEFINITELY not worthy of the 4-star designation, but it's quirkiness and minimalistness is in line with a boutique hotel. The details are definitely rough around the edges with some light buttons not working, odd locations of lamps or towel/clothes hooks, tiny TV that had super spotty coax connection, and a shower that is not entirely private. Luckily I didn't have any interruptions in the evenings, but the walls are a little thin. At the end of the day, it's a clean enough spot to sleep, shit, shower, and shave. Even though it's close to Hudson Yard, Vessel, Highline, and Javits; there didn't seem like too much going on in the area in the evenings. As a single man walking during the winter, I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe either. The minimal conversations and contacts I needed with staff were friendly and helpful.

Excellent hotel and facilities. The bed was really comfy and the room had everything we needed. It is a 0.6mile walk from the two nearest tube stops and a 20 minute walk from Penn station, which was a trek with suitcases! Staff were really friendly and helpful. We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel but we did use the roof bar.

Great location about a block from Chelsea Pier. Was listed as a Priceline 4.5 star special. It's a cute boutique hotel but not 4 star. No valet or parking. Front desk helped with early check-in. Room was TINY, too small for the queen bed. Challenging to walk around the bed without flopping into it. Bed itself is lower than normal (reminded me of a college futon) but was comfortable. Cold concrete floors throughout. Walls very poor, could hear EVERY word, sound and cough from our neighbors, doors opening & closing on multiple floors, music from bar 3 floors above, and car horns beeping every 30 seconds or less through the night. Also reminded me of college. Rooftop bar was fun but couldn't serve coffee or the "signature" hot cider. Charged for an old faded blood stain on a bath towel. Front desk removed the charge as a courtesy. Never before have I ever felt like I should have documented the condition of linens. Not the way to get return visitors.
