I’m staying at the Grand Princess Sunset Resort for the first time, and after a few days here, I’m really happy with my experience. The resort has a great atmosphere and plenty of activities to enjoy. Although I wish there were a bit more nightlife options, like a disco or club, the day entertainment is still fun and lively. I also love that there are so many classes available! I’ve taken yoga and tennis so far, and I want to give a special shoutout to Jose Alfredo Alvarez. I took my very first tennis lesson with him, and I was amazed — by the end of the class, I was already able to correct my stance and return the ball confidently! Jose is an excellent instructor — patient, positive, and truly passionate about teaching. Thanks to him, I’ve completely fallen in love with tennis! 🎾

Stayed for 3 nights and had a great experience. Resort is clean, staff is friendly and resort wasn’t overcrowded. Booked restaurants through their app and were able to change menu as restaurant locations are shared while renovations are going on. The renovations didn’t disturb our stay. Spa is nice and clean. Didn’t get to try the Hydra pools, but was told they are opening soon.

I should preface this by saying that I have never left a public review for a hotel before but this was such a frustrating experience that I felt the need to. In short, this hotel is not worth the money and should be avoided. For completeness, I have summarised the good, the mediocre and the bad points to note. The Good: the grounds are huge and could be very beautiful if the staff could keep up with the cleaning and maintenance of them (e.g. almost every room had light bulbs that were out or empty cups left all around the place). There's also lots of animals - birds, deer, raccoons and coatis with lots of personality. The Mediocre: the buffet often serves cold food and it's the same food every single day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cleaners visit your room every day but during our 2 week stay they did not mop the floors once or wipe any counter top that wasn't the bathroom sink. Given that suncream or dry oil spray get everywhere, I found this annoying. They tend to focus on making pretty shapes out of your toilet paper instead. The cleaners also visit your room even if you have the "do not disturb" light on so I recommend physically locking your door because they do just stroll in and then you have to politely tell them to go away whilst you are feeling fragile after a Tequila Night. Word of warning, they may even call you on your room telephone after that to check if you are ready for them to come in and clean your room because they are so eager to make your bed. If you are bothered about evening entertainment you will be quite disappointed as it doesn't run every night and when it does, it leaves people walking out after 10 minutes. There's also construction happening right now which has left one half of the hotel unavailable and the remaining open side can get noisy. Only 4 resturants are open and a handful of bars. We did stay at this hotel out of season so I understand that this is the optimum time for this to take place but I think that guests should have been informed. The Incredibly Frustrating: you cannot move around this hotel without somebody constantly approaching you to sell massages, experiences, taking photos with a monkey on a leash or Coco Bongo etc. The staff are very hit and miss. Most of them loiter around you after every bit of interaction awkwardly smiling and waiting for a tip. If you don't tip and you are unlucky enough to be served by the same person again (e.g. you are seated in their section at the buffet), do not expect them to so much as look in your direction. In this hotel, you get nothing without tipping. The other point to note is that if you ask for a coffee (simple americano) a lot of the bartenders look at the coffee machine like it's a spaceship that might blow up. On multiple occasions we felt like we were in an episode of Fawlty Towers. There's no customer service from reception or the concierge. They ask you to do most things by scanning a QR code to limit as much interaction as possible. The QR code then takes you to a dysfunctional website (if you are lucky enough to get any WiFi that is). We had issues with booking resturants as our party was split across 2 rooms and we were only able to book for 1 person on 2 occasions. When asking the concierge for help with this, he literally refused and stated that "he will only help if we are handicapped". Issues with rooms are a common occurnace which guests of this hotel tend to bond over at the smoking area. As mentioned before, our party was split across 2 rooms. One room had a sewage problem whereby pungent smells often filled the room. This smell of sewage is also available for you to experience on the beach or any outside space next to a pipe. I recommend the central "plaza" square by the buffet or the around the shop close to the beach. The other room, although no sewage issue, had mould growing inside the wardrobe and chest of drawers. I have never seen anything quite like it - white and orange fuzzy patches that then spread into thick cauliflower textured blotches.

⭐☆☆☆☆ “Welcome to Playa del Poo-poo” — Grand Sunset Princess, Nov 3–10, 2025 If you enjoy being constantly sold to, waiting in long lines, and smelling sewage while trying to relax by the beach — boy, do I have the resort for you! The Good: The rooms are clean (just old enough to make you nostalgic for 1988), the grounds look great, and the food won’t kill you. It’s edible, it’s fine, it exists. The Bad: You can’t walk ten feet without someone trying to sell you something — excursions, massages, snorkeling, “special presentations” (spoiler: it’s a timeshare pitch). Parts of the resort are under construction, but they won’t tell you that before you book. Restaurants closed, pool slides taped off, swim-up suites you paid extra for? Also closed. No refund, no warning, just caution tape and disappointment. During the pool party hours, getting a drink is next to impossible. Picture fifty sweaty tourists trying to get one bartender’s attention while you wonder why they don’t just pre-pour a few cervezas. The buffet? Same thing, three times a day, seven days straight. Variety, yes. Excitement, no. The Ugly: Check-in was absolutely brutal. Two clerks for thirty tired guests, and immediately you’re hit with the surprise 230 peso “eco tax.” No welcome drink, no smile — just “give us your money and stand over there.” When I finally got to my room (after my bag was left unattended and I dragged it up three flights of stairs because the elevator was broken), I thought, “Well, it can’t get worse.” Then I went to the beach. The beach smells like a sewage plant. No exaggeration. The stench is unreal. The water is brownish and rocky — bring water shoes, or better yet, don’t bring yourself. For a resort charging over $2,000 a week, this is unacceptable. The Vibe: If you’re over 60, you’ll need a map and a chiropractor to get around. If you’re a family, good luck keeping kids entertained with everything closed. And if you came to party — sorry, the music dies at 5 p.m., and the disco is emptier than my patience by midweek. Ratings: Rooms & Grounds: ⭐⭐⭐½ Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Vibe: ⭐⭐ Beach: ⭐ Value: ⭐ Final Thoughts: Go literally anywhere else. There’s a reason this resort ranks near the bottom in Playa del Carmen. "Playa del Poo-poo"

Excellent experience! 🌴 This was my second time staying at Hotel Grand Sunset Princess Cancun, and both visits were absolutely amazing. The food was delicious with plenty of restaurant options to choose from, the atmosphere was lively and fun, and the beach was beautifully clean. Everything about the stay—from service to ambiance—made it another memorable vacation. Highly recommend!
