I stayed at Mount Lavinia Hotel during my visit to Sri Lanka, for 3 days. The property is located at a very scenic location and it is a grand structure. The hotel retains its charms and is definitely fitting of its legacy. The receptionists were extremely well spoken and polite, and took into account my request for an early check-in. I was provided refreshing welcome drinks at the time of my arrival and I was escorted very warmly by the hotel staff to my room. My room was extremely large in terms of area with functional amenities and an amazing view of the ocean. The room was extremely comfortable and all toiletries were provided. The staff did a commendable job in making me have a relaxing stay. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Colombo.

"I recently stayed at the Mount Lavinia Hotel and was truly captivated by the location. It is a stunning, historically rich destination with so much heritage to explore inside the property. The atmosphere is perfect, and the food buffet is excellent—offering a wide variety of choices and great value for money. I also want to commend the staff, who remained friendly throughout my stay. ​However, there were some notable management and operational issues that impacted my experience. Most significantly, it took over five hours for our room to be provided with drinking water, which was quite frustrating. Furthermore, the maintenance of the room facilities was not at a satisfactory level, which is a shame given how beautiful the hotel itself is. ​I believe the reception and welcoming process could also be improved to match the caliber of the surroundings. The pool area was fine, but overall, while the location is perfect, the management needs to focus more on internal room maintenance and response times to ensure guests have a comfortable stay. I hope to see these operational aspects improved in the future."

I recently stayed at Mount Lavinia Hotel from 1st to 2nd May 2026. The food quality was very good, and we truly enjoyed the variety and taste of the dishes offered. However, there were a few areas that could be improved. At the buffet, some food items were not refilled once they were finished, which was a bit disappointing. In addition, the cleanliness of the surrounding areas was not up to expectations. The service level of the staff also needs attention. On several occasions, after we finished eating, our plates were not cleared unless we requested it, which affected the overall dining experience. On a positive note, the pool attendant was very attentive and responsible. He was always alert and even advised our child not to go into the deep end, which we really appreciated. Overall, while the food and poolside service were highlights, improvements in general service, cleanliness, and buffet management would greatly enhance the guest experience.

One of the Worst Hotel Experiences We’ve Ever Had Our stay at Mount Lavinia Hotel was an extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. When we arrived, we noticed that some guests were offered welcome drinks while others, including our group, received nothing. It immediately gave the impression of inconsistent and unprofessional service. Things only got worse when we reached our room. We had specifically booked a triple room, but it wasn’t prepared when we arrived. We waited patiently while they arranged it. Even after that, the room was missing basic bathroom amenities and toiletries, which should have been provided before guests checked in. The hotel corridors also looked old, poorly maintained, and uninviting, creating a very poor first impression. The biggest disappointment was dinner. By the time we arrived at the restaurant, there was almost no food left. The hotel had clearly failed to prepare enough food for all its guests. Many guests were visibly upset and complaining, and we were left with almost nothing to eat. It was unacceptable for a hotel of this reputation to fail to manage something so basic. At that point, we decided we could no longer stay. We went to the reception and requested a refund. Instead of resolving the issue professionally, the staff repeatedly told us that because we had booked through a travel agent, they could not help us. We spent nearly two hours at reception trying to resolve the matter before they finally agreed to process our refund. By the time everything was settled, it was around 11:00 PM. Late at night, we had no choice but to leave the hotel and book another one because we simply could not continue staying there. The rooms were not properly prepared for guests, essential supplies were missing, dinner was a complete disaster, and the overall service was extremely poor. This was one of the most stressful and disappointing hotel experiences we’ve had. We expected much better from a hotel with such a well-known reputation. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we would not recommend Mount Lavinia Hotel to anyone.

Do not let the historical reputation of Mount Lavinia Hotel fool you staying here was an absolute nightmare and a total waste of money. For the price they charge, this place feels like a complete scam. You can easily find far superior accommodation elsewhere in the area for the same budget. Lack of Maintenance: The ceiling paint was visibly peeling off, and the bed headboard was severely discoloured and stained. Dirty Bedding & Missing Amenities: The bed sheets had noticeable marks on them, and basic essentials like toothpaste were not even provided. Disgusting Bathroom: The bathroom grouting was dark, filthy, and completely unhygienic. Worse yet, there was no hot water available during the stay. Mount Lavinia Hotel is actively ruining Sri Lanka’s reputation and tourism industry by serving guests under these appalling conditions. Management needs to either close this property down immediately or shut it down for a complete, top-to-bottom renovation. Save your money and peace of mind—do yourself a favour and book anywhere else.
