Fort Myers holidays provide an opportunity to relax, take things easy and enjoy natural beauty, energising adventures and enriching culture at your own pace.
With something for everyone in this delightful destination, you can choose to do as you please, sharing special moments with family, friends or that special someone.
Many of the things to do in Fort Myers revolve around the great outdoors, with the diverse landscape of southwest Florida providing perfect locations for a plethora of activities.
Take a kayak along some of the nearly 200 miles of waterways of the Great Calusa Blueway, fish for freshwater bass at Lakes Park, or explore the colourful coral reefs of the Gulf of Mexico on a scuba diving adventure.
Other activities to enjoy include canoeing, cycling and horseback riding, while you can set sail on an island-hopping cruise, tee off at a choice of superb golf courses, or partake in a friendly game of pickleball.
If you’re on holiday with little ones, Sunsplash Family Waterpark, in Cape Coral, is a superb place for a fun day out, while older children will enjoy tackling the aquatic obstacle course at Brightwater Lagoon, in North Fort Myers.
Other family-friendly attractions include 810 Billiards and Bowling, in Estero, Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, IMAG History & Science Center and Wonder Gardens.
Fort Myers’ rich history is also well worth exploring. Pay a visit to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, where American inventor Thomas Edison spent his winters in the late 1800s with his friend, legendary car maker Henry Ford, next door. Here you can walk in the garden, venture inside the homes, peek into Edison’s lab and see some of the early-model Ford cars.
Williams Academy Black History Museum, the Museum of the Island and the Mound House are other attractions worth seeking out. Alternatively, add a splash of culture and creativity to your holiday by wandering through Fort Myers Historic River District, where you’ll find more than 50 murals showcasing the area’s compelling history.
You’ll also have the chance to discover a variety of art galleries, theatres and entertainment venues.
If wildlife is more your thing, you’ll be in paradise during a holiday in Fort Myers. The rivers, creeks, swamps, mangroves, Gulf waters and forests are home to a multitude of animals, with dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, alligators, roseate spoonbills and snowy egrets among the species to look out for.
Enjoy unforgettable nature experiences in Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, Lovers Key State Park, Manatee Park and J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge among other wildlife havens. The Everglades National Park, a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also within reach a short drive from Fort Myers.
To make the most of your holiday, the best time to visit Fort Myers is during the dry season, from December to April.
During this period, you’ll be able to spend days at the beach and enjoy all the activities on offer, taking advantage of warm, sunny days, lower humidity and temperatures of around 24 to 28°C.
For a quieter holiday, visiting between late April and early June could be an option, with the weather staying mostly pleasant and the opportunity to find a cheap deal on your escape. Temperatures then rise during the summer months of June, July and August, with regular afternoon showers and some storms. As with the rest of Florida, Fort Myers also experiences hurricanes, with the official hurricane season from June to November.
Invigorating sunshine, soft white sand and calm waters make Fort Myers beach holidays complete bliss.
Whether you’re seeking fun, relaxation or activities, with immaculate shorelines that stretch as far as the eye can see, as well as countless coves and beautiful bays, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for.
Fort Myers Beach
It’s hardly surprising that a town called Fort Myers Beach has its fair share of pretty stretches of shoreline.
For white sands, chilled-out vibes, beachside dining and stunning sunsets make a beeline for Lynn Hall Memorial Park.
Alternatively, embrace peace and tranquillity on the shores of Bowditch Point Park, a delightful spot for fishing and picnics.
Captiva Island
Breathtaking natural beauty awaits on Captiva Island, where the spellbinding seaside scenery provides the perfect backdrop for romance.
Expect pristine white sands, turquoise waters and swaying palms at Alison Hagerup Beach Park, an ideal spot for couples to cuddle up and watch the sun go down.
If swimming, fishing or simply relaxing top your plans, Turner Beach will be right up your street.
Sanibel Island
Captiva Island’s larger neighbour, Sanibel Island is equally as spectacular, with pristine white sands that attract a myriad of bird species and waters that are home to dolphins and sea turtles.
Find seclusion and seashells on the shores of Bowman’s Beach, or discover the enchanting scenery and historic lighthouse at Lighthouse Beach Park.
Keen anglers and walkers may choose to visit Blind Pass Beach, while Gulfside City Park is a haven for wildlife, with gopher tortoises among the residents.
Bonita Springs
From secluded sands to water sports thrills, you’ll find it all and much more in Bonita Springs.
Lovers Key State Park is an ideal spot for couples seeking leisurely strolls on the sands and romantic sunsets, while a lively beach day can be enjoyed at Bonita Beach Park, where paddleboarding and jet skiing are among the aquatic pursuits on offer.
Boca Grande and Outer Islands
For some of the most beautiful beaches, you’ll have to venture north of Captiva Island.
Gasparilla Island State Park, in Boca Grande, is a mile-long stretch of postcard-perfect white sand, where you’ll find a picturesque lighthouse and plenty of space to relax and enjoy the scenery.
However, if you’re seeking the ultimate castaway experience, you’ll have to charter a private boat and set sail for Cayo Costa State Park.
Here you’ll find unspoilt beach beauty and crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. That’s if you don’t mind sharing this aquatic playground with dolphins and manatees.
If fabulous food and exceptional dining destinations top your holiday wish list, Fort Myers will not disappoint.
